2013 BMW X6

Billed as the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, many critics predicted the model’s early demise when it first appeared in 2008. Some critiqued its distinctive silhouette as odd. Others characterized it as “jack of all trades, master of none” because of its claims to all and more. But now, some three years after its initial launch, BMW reports a sale of 150,000 X6, a number far exceeded the company’s original forecast. Thus, it leads us to this, the new 2013 BMW X6.

Aside from the minor cosmetic alterations, the new BMW X6 will include the new adaptive LED headlights, with the rear lights receiving similar switch as well. One other change is its powertrain, now with two options of a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six or a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. An slight improvement over the previous model, the X6 xDrive35i’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six gets an increase of around 15-horsepower at 315 and 330 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the V8 is able to generate 440-horsepower, an increase of 40, with 480 pound-feet of torque. Of course, both are not counting the X6 M, which revs out more than 500-horsepower through its modified V8.

While certainly not the prettiest cross-over design out there, the BMW engineered the X6 for one goal and one goal only – to get the job done no matter what the task might be. The 2013 BMW X6 will arrive at BMW showrooms around the world in the coming months.

Because deep down, all you've ever really wanted are smartphone adjustable WiFi-LED light tubes controlled by a remote server out in the ether. Snarkiness aside, that's exactly what Japan's Net LED Technology Corporation has done with a lighting system it lovingly calls NetLED. The setup isn't for frugal types as, before even purchasing lights, you'll need to plunk down 60,000 yen (around $780) for a netLED router that serves as an intermediary between those fixtures and the company's remote server. The addition of that hardware enables the 19,800 yen (around $260) WiFi-equipped 40W LED arrays to be monitored and adjusted remotely via a web browser or an iPhone app. And, if WiFi tubes are too rich for your blood, each WiFi-toting fixture can be paired with up to three cheaper WiFi-less slaves that cost 14,000 yen (around $182). It's complex and pricey stuff, yet the company estimates you'll cut energy consumption by half after you amass 200 units. Those brave enough to find out, can take the plunge February 20th when it all goes on sale -- just let us know how you fare, cool? ROLEX: THE P&B VINTAGE BUYING GUIDE

For a lot of guys, picking out a vintage watch begins and ends with a single brand: Rolex. This isn’t for a lack of worthy alternatives—there are plenty, and we’ll cover them all in these guides—but because there are just so many iconic Rolex models, each groundbreaking in its own way. From the original waterproof Oyster, to the Explorer that accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary up Mount Everest, to the Submariner, 007’s diving watch of choice in Dr. No, pretty much every Rolex has a cool backstory. And a cool backstory is exactly what you want in a vintage watch. Well that, timeless design, and a track record of appreciating in value—but Rolexes have this, too. Horological expert Ben Clymer, of Hodinkee.com, has the lowdown, from bezel to backstory.

Models to Know

Rolex makes a small number of models, but they’re all icons. Divided into “sport” and “non-sport” categories, most of them employ the waterproof Oyster case, Rolex's properitary waterproof design that inspired the entire industry to look at water resistance as a necessary feature of mechanical watch cases. In the sport category, the principal models are the Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master, Explorer, and Explorer II. In the non-sport category, the key models are the Day-Date and the Datejust.

Rolex Submariner

Produced starting in the early ’50s, the Submariner is considered the world’s most famous wristwatch, and it’s one of the most versatile watches a man can buy. Early “big crown” examples (8mm versus the traditional 5mm), like references 5510, 6538, and 6200, can fetch up to $100,000 at auction. The earliest modern Submariners date to the ’60s and feature crown guards; by 1969 reference 1680 had been added to the lineup—the first Submariner with a date window. Other essential models include reference 5517, which was made specifically for the British Ministry of Defense (and never released commercially), early 1680s with red writing on the dial, any reference with “gilt” or gold colored writing, and Submariners made for the French offshore diving company Comex.

Rolex Daytona

The Daytona launched in the early ’60s, with reference 6239, and it’s the most valuable and sought after Rolex sport model (the chronograph makes it the most complicated). In the ’70s, the Daytona, named after the Florida racetrack, took on Heuer as chronograph du jour with racers the world over. The most collectible Daytonas date to the mid-’70s, when there were a host of different dial suppliers. One supplier was Singer, and it produced colored dials (instead of the standard silver and black) with small squares at the end of each counter. These “exotic dials” sold very poorly, until it became known that Paul Newman was wearing one of them. The Paul Newman Daytonas exist in many different references, but those with "screw-down" pushers tend to be more favored. Of the non-Newman variations, 6263s and 6265s with “Daytona” written in red are popular. However, a Newman will, on average, sell for four to five times that of a regular-dial equivalent (buyer beware: Newman dials are notorious for being faked). Lastly, Zenith-powered automatic Daytonas are highly collectible, too, as many consider Zenith’s movement superior to the Rolex 4130 movement, though that is hotly debated.

Rolex GMT-Master

Co-developed for the first Pan-Am pilots, the GMT Master uses a fourth hand—in combination with a bi-color, 24-hour bezel—to display a second timezone. Ref 6542 is the most sought after, especially those with original Bakelite bezels. These bezels were supposedly radioactive, and Rolex replaced them in the late 1950s; originals sell for around $15,000 alone. The most well-known GMT Master is the 1675, with a blue and red bezel known as the Pepsi bezel (the two colors are designed to differentiate night and day). The holy grail of GMTs are those with white dials, given to Pan-Am executives during the watch’s development, though many experts today doubt their originality.

Rolex Explorer

The Explorer is the runt of the Rolex sport-watch litter. Sized at just 36mm until 2010, when it was upgraded to 39mm, the Explorer was made famous by Sir Edmund Hillary, who summited Mt. Everest with it in 1953. The 1016 is the most sought after by collectors, especially those with gilt dials, due to their rarity. The Explorer is a perfect watch for formal or casual wear and remains undervalued compared to rest of the brand’s sport models.

Rolex Explorer II

Made as a watch for spelunkers, the Explorer II features a 24-hour hand that would tell the wearer if it was day or night (if you’re in a cave, it can be hard to tell). The hand for the 1655, done in bright orange, was off-putting to some clients, and the watch did not sell well. In the ’80s, the watch was toned down with a more traditional red 24-hour hand—and eventually, the 24-hour hand was replaced with a second-timezone hand to make it more practical. Unsurprisingly, the early ’70s Explorer IIs with orange 24-hour hands are highly collectible today. Also collectible: early models with straight second hands (instead of those with a ball at the tip) and references from the mid-’80s whose original white paint has turned cream-colored. For years it was believed that Steve McQueen wore this watch, but that has since been dis-proven.

Rolex Day-Date

Often called the “president,” this is the watch worn by commanders in chief, CEOs—and gangsters. The watch still looks much like it did when it was conceived in the ’50s and features both a date window with a Cyclops magnifier and a day-of-the-week indicator at 12 o’clock. The Day-Date is the only Rolex never to have been offered in stainless steel, and because most were made in yellow gold, those made in white gold and platinum are far more valuable. The earliest examples are, again, the most sought after, though rare enamel-dial versions from the ’70s are gaining steam among high-end buyers; these “Stella” dials (named for the company that made them) are often made in very bright colors. Yellow gold Day-Dates are still a fantastic value and often trade at a fraction of their new retail price of almost $30,000.

Rolex Date

A paired-down Day-Date, the Datejust offers a Cyclops-magnified date window. These watches, especially the 18-karat gold vintage variations, offer tremendous value for the dollar. Though the model officially launched in the ’50s, some Rolexes from the ’40s use the name on the dial. They’re not considered part of the same family, but are sought after nonetheless.

If you need a reminder that Google can still make cool stuff, check out their latest app for iOS and Android: Google Currents. It's pretty much a Flipboard clone in that the app turns web content (news sources, rss feeds, etc.) into a slick digital magazine with awesome visuals.

Google Currents takes content that's available on websites you already go to (like us and many others!) and then reformats the content into a more digestible and easy on the eyes format. Basically, it's what you already read optimized for your tablet and phone. If you're familiar with Flipboard, which is one of the best tablet apps around, it's pretty much the same idea, transforming web content into magazines.

It's dead simple to add more content to Google Currents and you can even add RSS, video and photo feeds, Google Reader subscriptions and Google+ streams (haha). What's also noteworthy is that the app looks and works great on every platform, from Android tablets and iPads to iPhones and Android phones. Check it out, it's free and could very well be the coolest thing Google has ever made.

If there is one thing that we actually would like to have on Android from iOS, that would be Instagram. Sure, there are a lot of photo filters on Android Market but unlike the iOS-exclusive Instagram, they are pure apps instead of an integrated platform. With around 14 to 15 million users currently using it to snap and share photos with each other, Instagram’s user base will become even bigger in the near future as they are currently working on bringing the service to Android.

"We have two people working on Android now. I'm excited to be able to see our numbers today nearly double,” - Kevin Systrom, CEO, Instagram.

We expect the service to be free of charge on Android as well, so there is no doubt that millions of Android users will pick it up in an instant especially with such reputation that Instagram already has on iOS. However, no release timeline has been announced so far but still, we can't wait to see how Instagram for Android will fare against its iOS counterpart.

This old-school dumbbell routine builds muscle and melts unwanted flab the old-fashioned way—hard work, no rest. Do this four-exercise circuit with no break between exercises. After completing a circuit, rest for 90 seconds before doing it again. Do three complete circuits.

Incline bench press

A. Grab a pair of dumbbells and lie on your back on a bench set to a low incline (15 to 30 degrees). Lift the dumbbells up to arm’s length so they’re over your chin, and hold them with your palms turned toward your feet (thumbs facing each other).

B. Slowly lower the weights to your upper chest, pause, and push them back up over your chin.

REPS: 10 to 12A.

One arm snatch

A. Hold a dumbbell in your right hand using an overhand grip. With your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees and place the dumbbell on the floor.

B. Perform a high pull: In one explosive movement, straighten your legs and hips while bending your elbow to pull the dumbbell upward.

C. At the dumbbell’s highest point, drop your hips and “catch” the weight by rotating your wrist under the dumbbell. Quickly straighten your arm so the dumbbell is now over the top of your shoulder. Complete all your reps, and then repeat with the dumbbell in your left hand.

REPS: Do 10 with each arm.

Seated calf raise

A. Place a step in front of a bench, grab a pair of dumbbells, and sit down. Set the balls of both feet on the step, and hold a dumbbell vertically on each knee. Lower both heels as far as you can without touching the floor.

B. Push off the balls of your feet and lift your heels as high as you can. Pause and repeat.

REPS: 10 to 12

Chest supported row

A. Grab a pair of dumbbells and lie chest down on an adjustable bench set to a low incline. Let the dumbbells hang at arm’s length from your shoulders, your palms facing each other.

B. Without moving your torso, pull the weights to your sides. Pause, lower, and repeat.

REPS: 10 to 12

Push Your Growth

Follow these three steps to add layers of new muscle in just 8 weeks. The first step builds your endurance, the second increases strength, and the final step adds explosiveness and speed so you can pack on more size.

Before starting the program, you should be able to do 20 consecutive pushups. If you can't, then build your strength with this 3-week prep: Three days a week, do 3 sets of pushups, resting 3 minutes between sets. (A set is as many pushups as you can complete.)

The entire workout uses variations of the standard pushup. For each movement, assume a pushup position (with your body in a straight line from ankles to shoulders) and then lower your chest to the floor. Press your body back to the starting position by straightening your arms.

1: Weeks 1 and 2

Perform these exercises 2 or 3 days a week in the order shown, with at least 1 day of rest between workouts. Complete 3 sets of each pushup type, resting 1 to 2 minutes between sets. Aim for sets of 10 to 15 reps; if you can't reach that goal, do as many reps as you can.

A. Wide pushup

Do a standard pushup, but with your hands wider than shoulder-width apart.

B. Alternating shuffle pushup

Start in pushup position. Move your right hand to the left until your two hands are next to each other. Now slide your left hand farther left until your hands are shoulder-width apart again. Do a pushup and repeat the process, this time moving to the right and doing another pushup. That's 1 rep.

C. Diamond pushup

Do a pushup with your hands close enough for the tips of your thumbs and index fingers to touch, forming a diamond shape.

2: Weeks 3, 4, 5, and 6

Perform these exercises 2 days a week. Complete 4 sets of each pushup type, resting 1 to 2 minutes between sets. Aim for 10 to 15 reps in each set. For these pushups, you'll need a 4- to 8-inch-high box or step.

A. One-arm pushup

Do a pushup with your right hand on the floor and your left hand on the box. Switch arms and repeat. That's 1 rep.

B. Crossover box pushup

Do a one-arm pushup with your left hand on the box. Then, from the starting position, lift your right hand and place it beside your left hand on top of the box. Then move your left hand down to the floor so your hands are shoulder-width apart again. Perform a pushup. That's 1 rep.

C. Hands-on-box diamond pushup

Perform a diamond pushup, but with both hands on the box.

D. Dynamic box pushup

Place your hands on a box in the diamond pushup position. Lower your body and press explosively off the box, your hands landing on the floor with the box between them. Immediately lower your body and press explosively up so your hands land back on the box in the starting position. That's 1 rep.

3: Weeks 7 and 8

Complete the exercises in step 2 as a circuit, performing one exercise after the other with no rest. Try to perform 10 reps of each exercise. Do this twice a week, and allow 3 or 4 days of rest.

THE OLD FASHIONED

Ingredients:
2 dashes aromatic bitters
½ tsp sugar dissolved with water and bitters
1½ oz of bourbon
1 cherry
1 orange slice
1 lemon wedge

Instructions:
Fill glass with ice. Add cherry, orange slice, and lemon wedge. Pour in bourbon. Serve in a rocks glass over ice.

THE MANHATTAN

Ingredients:
1¾ oz bourbon
¾ oz of sweet vermouth
1 dash of aromatic bitters
1 Maraschino cherry

Instructions:
Pour bitters, liquors over ice in mixing glass. Stir and strain into martini glass. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry.

THE TOM COLLINS

Ingredients:
1 oz fresh lemon juice
1 tsp sugar
1½ oz of gin
Lemon slices

Instructions:
Mix sugar, gin, and juice over ice in mixing glass. Stir, strain in cocktail glass with ice, and top off with soda water. Garnish with lemon slices.

THE SIDECAR

Ingredients:
1½ oz cognac
¾ oz triple sec
¾ oz fresh lemon juice
1 orange slice

Instructions:
Squeeze lemon in mixing glass. Shake briskly. Select sugar-rimmed snifter. Strain into glass and garnish with orange slice.

THE MARTINI

Ingredients:
2½ oz gin
1½ oz dry vermouth
3 green olives

Instructions:
Rinse martini glass in dry vermouth and pour out. Shake gin with ice until chilled. Pour into martini glass. Add olives.
